The BMW 3 Series has been manufactured since May 1975, and has – to date – been produced in seven distinct generations. It is BMW’s best-selling model, accounting for around 30% of BMW’s annual car sales, and numerous awards have been won by it, throughout its history.
The E36 (third generation) 3 Series was produced from 1990-2000. It was available in sedan, coupe, convertible, stationwagon, and both 3 and 5 door hatchback.
The E36 was the first 3 Series to be offered as a hatchback. It was also the first to be available with a 6 speed manual transmission (in the 1996 M3 sedan, coupe or convertible), a 5 speed automatic transmission and a four cylinder diesel engine.
