The BMW 5 Series is a large family, or ‘executive’ car. It has been manufactured by BMW since 1972 and is currently (as at 2019) in its seventh generation.

The E60/E61 is the fifth generation of the 5 Series. It was sold from 2003 to 2010. The E60 model code denotes the sedan model, and E61 denotes the stationwagon. The range was launched in 2003 for the sedan body style, and in 2004 for the wagon.

The model/s introduced many new safety features including adaptive headlights, night vision, active headrests, Lane Departure Warning and high intensity emergency brake lights. Other significant digital features included iDrive (a unified, digital user-centred control system), head-up display, active cruise control, active steering and voice control.

Firsts for the drivetrain included that it was the first 5 Series to be available with a turbocharged petrol engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission, regenerative braking. The M5 sports variation, which was released in 2005, is powered by a V10 engine that can accelerate to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds. It was sold in the sedan and wagon body styles, with the SMG III 7-speed (Sequential Manual Gearbox) the most commonly selected gearbox.
