Subaru has used the name Outback for two different vehicles. One of these is a station wagon (1994–2019[present]) based on the Subaru Liberty, and the other is a hatchback derived from the Impreza – the Outback Sport (1994–2011). However, from an Australian perspective, the former is the only relevant model as the Impreza based model was only available in North America.

The original model name for the Liberty is the Legacy, but this was changed in Australia on account of Legacy Australia, the NGO that aids the families of military veterans.

The first generation of the Outback was built from the second-generation of the Subaru Liberty wagon. It was called the Legacy Grand Wagon in Japan in 1995, and the “Legacy Outback” in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the Outback added a number of features to improve off road performance such as plastic side body cladding, a raised roof for more upright seating, and later raised suspension. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares virtually all of its components with the Legacy model it was based on.

For the Australian launch in 1996 the name “Legacy Outback” was shortened to “Outback”, and other markets soon followed.
