The BMW E81, E82, E87, & E88 represent the first generation of the BMW 1 Series. This model range was manufactured by BMW 2004-2013 and replaced and expanded on the 3 Series Compact as the smallest and most affordable vehicle in the BMW range.
The model classification referred to the car’s respective body type:
• E81 = 3 door hatchback
• E82 = 2 door coupe
• E87 = 5 door hatchback
• E88 = 2 door convertible
Unusually for a small car, the first generation 1 Series are exclusively rear-wheel drive. An M version was produced for the first generation: the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, which was succeeded by the BMW M2. The engines available were four cylinder diesel, and four or six cylinder petrol. Naturally aspirated and turbocharged options were available.
